Congratulations to our distinguished alumnus and Vice-Chairman of the College
Council Dr Michael Mak for being conferred Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa by
the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on 7 November 2014.
Dr Mak is widely recognised for his commitment in the education sector. He has been
serving the College Council of SPCC since 1988 and was the Supervisor from 1999
to 2010. He was also the Council Vice-Chairman of HKUST from 2008 to 2013, and is
currently a member on the University Grants Committee. He was made a Justice of the
Peace in 2005, and was awarded a Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS) in 2013.
Prof. Leung Koon-Shing Frederick of the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong
Kong has been named a Changjiang Scholar 2013/14 by the Ministry of Education of the
PRC. Changjiang Scholars are in the top tier of the country’s “High-level Creative Talents
Plan”, which aims to recruit talented academics and establish masters in their respective
academic disciplines in order to promote development of those disciplines to the highest
international level. Prof. Leung is the first Changjiang Scholar in the field of Mathematics
Education. In addition, he is also the awardee of the Hans Freudenthal Medal 2013, and
a senior Fulbright Scholar in 2002-2003.
